Getting an Overview of UAV Application in Science
The aim of this assessment is to develop a structured overview of how high-resolution UAV imagery, especially RGB/VIS data, is used in geography and the geosciences.
Rather than reading a few isolated papers, you should build a small but well-organized literature base that helps you identify major application areas, recurring methodological approaches, and current thematic directions in the field.
Requirements
Identify and collect at least 10 academic publications relevant to the topic.
Your selection must include at least 2 review or overview papers that help structure the field. The remaining sources should include original research articles representing different application areas, environmental contexts, or methodological approaches.
All selected literature must be imported into Zotero and organized in a clearly structured collection. Your Zotero library should contain complete bibliographic information and meaningful notes, tags, or comments that document your search and selection process.
What you should do
Based on your literature search, organize the identified publications into meaningful thematic categories.
Read at least 2 of the selected articles in full. The remaining articles should be examined selectively, but in sufficient depth to understand their research question, data basis, methodological approach, and main contribution.
From your overall reading, identify 3 key insights that stood out most to you. Explain briefly why you found these points particularly important, interesting, or surprising.
In addition, identify 3 topics or application areas that you would most like to explore further, based on the literature you reviewed. Briefly explain why these topics seem especially relevant or promising to you.
Written output
Prepare a concise structured summary of your literature review. Your summary should include a short description of your search focus, the thematic categories you identified, a brief synthesis of the field based on the selected literature, your 3 main highlights and why they mattered to you, and your 3 topics of greatest interest for further exploration.
In addition, select one article and prepare a short review of approximately 0.5 to 1 page using the PLOS peer review template as a structuring aid.
Submission
Submit your written summary via ILIAS.
Your Zotero collection should also be complete and well organized, so that it documents your literature search and thematic structuring of the field.
