UAV Application in Science

Goals

This module introduces the use of high-resolution UAV imagery in applied environmental science, with a particular focus on RGB/VIS data in geography and the geosciences.

Students should learn how to identify major application areas of UAV-based imaging, distinguish between overview papers and case studies, and use literature strategically rather than collecting papers at random. The module therefore combines guided reading with independent literature research.

A second goal is to build a structured overview of the field. Students should compare how UAV imagery is used across different environmental contexts, which data and workflows are involved, and where the specific strengths and limitations of high-resolution visible imagery become apparent.

Finally, the module aims to strengthen critical reading and scientific judgement. Students should not only summarize what they read, but also decide which themes, methods, and application areas they find most relevant, convincing, or interesting, and explain why.
